In baseball, there's an axiom that is oft-repeated by announcers, managers, players, and the common fan: Pitching and defense wins championships, or Good pitching beats good hitting. Is it true, or is it another stupid catchphrase that means nothing?
It's official (pending paperwork): I'll be the Assistant Coach of the Roosevelt HS JVC Baseball team! Coach Nelsen will be the head coach; it's also his first year coaching baseball, but had a successful football season with his freshmen kids who seem to like him very much. Tryouts start on the 24th of February, and games start 2-3 weeks after that, so we have a lot to get done in a short period of time, especially because we have a huge turnout of freshmen this year. Everyone at the various athletic meetings is excited about this crop of athletic freshmen who have already contributed at the football level (8-1 record, best in 10 years) and wrestling level (beating local rival Ballard and getting many invites to regionals for the kids).
I started working out at a training facility in Woodinville (25 minutes north) called the American Baseball Institute. The pitching coach's name is Neiman Nix, a Mike Marshall-type instructor. For those of you who are unaware of Marshall's teachings, he is a controversial ex-MLB player (Cy Young - 1974) turned pitching coach who has come up with a new type of delivery that he says will eliminate all arm-based injuries in pitchers. To achieve this goal, his pitchers train with 10-20 lb. wrist weights on their arms while going through various exercises, and throw 6-10 lb. iron balls as a form of overload training.
I have been meaning to make this post for awhile now, but I broke my computer by installing an nVidia 8800GT card while there was an ATI card still in there, and this led to needing to find a heat sink and my computer getting hacked and a bunch of other crap that I am happy is in the past. Now I'm running this wonderful Q6600 Quad-Core machine on Windows XP (I was fearing I'd have to use Vista, thank god I don't).
I wrote a more detailed explanation of these baseball bats on my other blog, but I wanted to share this with everyone (click for larger image):
If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, then the guys at YourHRGuy must be happy. I really like this new theme, and I'll be playing with it a bunch over the next few days to personalize it more, so I appreciate your patience while I temporarily break my website. Baseball Delusions will probably keep the old theme - I'll be updating that blog more as baseball becomes more relevant, but since my winter league is over, I haven't been doing much except off-season workouts with the high school team and keeping in shape myself.
The Indians are reportedly interested in Jason Bay. Rumors out of Pittsburgh say that they want OF-Trevor Crowe and SP-Chuck Lofgren. Crowe and Lofgren project to be league-average players, with Crowe being the slightly better prospect. Both should make it to the show, but neither are projected to be stars. Jason Bay is a star fallen from grace, turning in a year with 43 less walks and 14 less bombs.
