You People Are Sad.
Everywhere I turn on my LJ friendslist or my RSS aggregator, I see plenty of posts filled with dogmatic love for their candidate/hate for the other one. This typically manifests itself as love for Obama and hate for McCain, which is normal given the age and income demographic of my peers, not to mention their lack of education on economics.
These posts filled with hate, with such vitriol about how Bush fucked up our domestic economy, our soldiers in Iraq, our social rights, our healthcare, and how he poorly handled the 9/11 strikes are absolutely ridiculous to me. Yes, he has done a lot of things wrong, and he is not the best public speaker - that’s indisputable. However, need I remind you of the people that voted to authorize these wars? To authorize bailing out banks? To authorize the PATRIOT ACT USA? These people are Democrats and Republicans alike; their blind loyalty to the state that funds their paychecks and gives them opportunities to milk money from lobbyists and sell their votes have no bias be it Democratic or Republican.
The United States government is fucked up not because Bush is the president, but because of how politicians are incentivized. People cheering loudly for Obama and declaring that he will save us are deluded. Combining a Democrat in the Executive office with a Democratic majority in Congress is a surefire way to inflame our economic crisis and further convert our economy into a pure socialist state. The only thing lacking is true universal healthcare, which is coming within 30 years - we already have a socialist banking system, which was proven over the past month. And what do we have to show for it? The DJI fell below 8000 despite bans on shortselling, despite promises to inject $1 trillion into the domestic (and international!) economy, and despite bailing out homeowners who were lied to by their brokers and too stupid to realize they were being taken advantage of.
I wish you all the best, but the reason our country is a husk of what it used to be isn’t because of the Republicans. It’s because of politicians. As a wise man once said, the only difference between Democrats and Republicans are the ways they want to increase the size and scope of the government.
Goldwater and his ilk are dead; they sold out to the religious right years ago - not that they had any choice. We don’t have conservative politics anymore, so quit blaming them. Calling Republicans “conservative” is almost as embarrassing as calling Democrats liberals. You disgrace the word liberal by pushing for socialistic programs to forcibly take money out of my pocket to fund programs that you think are good. Somewhere, Adam Smith (a liberal) is rolling in his grave.
But don’t say I didn’t warn you. The general gist of things is that none of you listened to my advice about investing in gold and getting your money out of equities months or years ago (I’ve been touting this since 2001), and there’s no reason for me to believe that you’ll listen now. And maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s small sample size. Maybe Austrian economists really are stupid and praxeology is just a load of bullshit.
Or maybe, just maybe, you should look beyond your partisan clothing - be it Democrat or Republican - to see how humans really behave.
But you won’t. Because you’re so sure Obama or McCain is what we need.
Most of you are too smart to let that happen to you, but politics (merely an extension of religion at this point) tends to fuck with otherwise intelligent individuals.
